The IDZ (Click here to read more)

The CWCBR therefore aims to establish an industrial biodiversity corridor in the major industrial area of Saldanha. The industrial biodiversity corridor will be secured through a range of different land consolidation strategies where one of these would be the signing of stewardship agreements with CapeNature to ensure the long term protection and conservation of these corridors of vegetation. The CWCBR is undertaking stewardship on behalf of CapeNature within the CWCBR.

Young Professionals Programme

The young professionals programme is run by the Table mountain fund. Through this programme the Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve has been able to place an intern for two years.

The main duties of this intern include:

  • Providing assistance in the roll-out of the environmental education strategy. The intern will assist environmental education projects by providing logistical support and hands-on infield training of scholars.
  • Provide assistance in the roll-out of the CWCBR communication Strategy.
  • Providing technical support to the Conservation Stewardship Programme.

City of Cape Town - YES Programme (Click to read more)

Funded by the City of Cape Town.
Creating temporary employment and capacity development for over 30
Atlantis community members that were previously unemployed.

Intern Project: Green Food Gardening Project

The concept of this project is more than just about food gardening. It also includes the cultivation and use of indigenous herbs and perennials. A marketing and distribution strategy shall help the project to sustain itself and create benifits for the whole community to make poor peoples livesĀ better.

Realised with the support of volunteers, it allows for, and promotes, an exchange of skilled knowledge and social relations. Regular scientific data collection takes place throughout the implementation in order to monitor the progress.

From this pilot project -to a common way of urban use in other communities- is what we want to achieve to ensure sustainable development in the biosphere.

Youth Environmental and Life Skills Educational Project (Click to learn more)

The Mountain to Sea project is for disadvantaged children between the ages of 7-18. It entails a hike up Table Mountain and a two day tour through the CWCBR. Experiential education is the focus with topics including: Litter, HIV/AIDS, how to use and recognize medicinal plants, water and soil conservation, tourism to communities, cultural heritage

Results: Over 500 children in 2007 participated

Spatial Development Plan (SDP) for the Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve (Click to learn more)

The purpose of this project is to collate many of the missing links that are created by the silo effect of different spheres of government and departments implementing each of their legislative requirements within the boundaries of each municipality.

Results: Provides a service and direct support to the municipalities in their legal obligations. 6 partnerships developed through this.

Landcare

Landcare and Youth Educational Project (Click to learn more)

The objective is to help young people to develop their physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual capacities as individuals and as members of society, and thus contribute to the implementation of sustainable development with respect to our natural resources, and finally to the development of a better world.

Delineation of a biodiversity corridor between core zones and contractual agreements for conservation

Delineation of the corridor between the Blaauwberg Conservation Area and the Koeberg Nature Reserve and the potential Southern Core delineation. This project aims to identify key parcels of land that will form a corridor interconnecting already proclaimed nature reserves to ensure that the integrity of the ecosystems and indigenous vegetation are maintained. This involved ground-truthing the area. Contractual agreements with private landowners are entered into to secure conservation worthy land and which further seeks to ensure that at least 3 critically endangered vegetation types are conserved.

Results: GIS maps with associated key data available for the designated corridor At least 8 contractual agreements signed by 2010

Trails & Tourism (Click to learn more)

Funded by the Development Bank of South Africa this project seeks to identify and determine the feasibility of a range of tourism products within the borders of the Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve stretching over 5 municipalities. It focuses on the potential of community involvement with tourism products and the necessary weighting of products that will attract tour operators and visitors from the surrounding areas Results: 7 tourism products have been identified, amongst others

Fynbos Rehabilitation Project (Click here to learn more)

  • Funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality
  • This included three sites on renosterveld vegetation, namely the Darling
  • Renosterveld Reserve; the Groenkloof Reserve; and !Khwa Ttu

Stewardship Project (Click to learn more)

Funded by the World Bank in collaboration with CapeNature,
This project aims to secure priority sites for conservation in the Saldanha / Langebaan area. The vegetation in these sites is considered as critically endangered and far less than 10% of such vegetation is formally conserved.

Biodiversity Corridor Development

Funded by the Table Mountain Fund and planned in collaboration with the City of Cape Town, the planning of this corridor has been completed. Now the CWCBR must take this beyond the planning phase to implementation. This project not only seeks to conserve critically endangered vegetation, but also to inform development processes. This also seeks to assist landowners within this corridor in their planning.
